Budget and Appropriations

Status of FY 2014, 2015, and 2016 Budgets:

FY 2014

On January 17, 2014, the President signed the omnibus spending bill for FY 2014. The operating budget for NIA is $1,168.098 million, which includes approximately an additional $100 million for Alzheimer’s Disease. The operating budget allows for 1,486 total research project grants (RPGs), including 388 new and competing awards. The estimate includes $79.132 million for research centers, $36.607 million for other research, and $23.512 million for research training. The R&D contract mechanism will be supported at a level of $59.800 million.

FY 2015

The FY 2015 President’s budget was released to the public on March 7, 2014. The President’s request for NIH is $30.362 billion, which is $211 million higher than the FY 2014 level of $30.151 billion.

The NIA budget request for FY 2015 is $1,170.880 million, an increase of $1.453 million over the FY 2014 comparable enacted level. The NIA FY 2014 Congressional Justification can be viewed at http://www.nia.nih.gov/about/budget/2014/fiscal-year-2015-budget.

For NIA, the FY 2015 President’s Budget will allow for 1,507 total research project grants (RPGs), including 378 new and competing awards. The estimate includes $81.359 million for research centers, $36.607 million for other research grants, and $23.747 million for research training. The R&D contract mechanism will be supported at a level of $59.800 million, the same level as the FY 2014 operating budget.

FY 2016

Preliminary work on the budget for FY 2016 has begun using the FY 2015 President’s budget request as the base. After intermediate stages of review, the President’s budget request for FY 2016 will be presented to Congress in February 2015, at which time it will become available to the public.
